Beauty Sleep: Why it's Important and How to Achieve it
Everyday we see ads for new innovations in the beauty industry that promise to make us look ten years younger, create a flawless glow, or simply eliminate every imperfection. Today’s society is always looking to buy solutions to our problems instead of creating healthy habits that will heal us from the inside out. Believe me, I do it too. If we can learn take care of ourselves mentally and physically, starting with a good nights rest, we will see results that companies can only promise us. Sleep can improve your immune system, help you maintain a healthy weight, and keep your skin youthful. And the best part is that sleep won’t cost you anything! Here are my top tips on how to get the perfect beauty rest.
Turn Off Your Phone
For many of us, the last thing we do before bed is look at our phone. While it is certainly tempting to get cozy and scroll through TikTok, it can be detrimental to your sleep. The blue light on your phone blocks your body’s natural release of melatonin and can keep you up for hours. Instead, I suggest reading a book, listening to a podcast, taking a bath, or meditating to help your body unwind. I also recommend putting your phone in another room to keep the radiation from disrupting your body’s natural circadian rhythm.
Sleep On Your Back
If your anything like me, you find sleeping on your back uncomfortable and unnatural. However, it is the best position for not only your body, but for your face. Studies have shown that sleeping on your back can prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming and actual helps keep your face symmetrical. If you have trouble sleeping on your back, I suggest placing pillows under your legs and arms to provide extra support. I also recommend using a silk sleep mask that will not irritate your skin or a weighted blanket to keep you calm.
Have a Routine
Your body has a natural circadian rhythm that it wants to follow. If you can create a routine of going to bed at roughly the same time every night, you will have a much easier time falling and staying asleep. It may take some time for your body to get used to your new routine, but staying consistent will help you so much in the long run!
Sleep at Least 7 Hours
While you sleep, your body naturally produces collagen that prevents wrinkles and keeps your skin’s elasticity. Studies have shown that your body produces twice as much collagen when you get seven hours of sleep versus just five.
Create a Restful Environment
Light some candles, put on some soothing tunes, and invest in high quality bedding! It is crucial to create a space that you feel relaxed and comfortable in so your body can recharge. I personally never skimp on good sheets and pillows because a good night’s rest leads to a more successful day!
